OpenAI’s ChatGPT can now see the browser tabs you already have open in Google Chrome. The company has upgraded its Chrome extension so the chatbot can work with those pages directly, a change that comes even as its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser is gone.
With the extension installed, users tag Chrome in ChatGPT’s web or desktop app, and the assistant can view the open tabs. OpenAI posted a demo video showing a person asking ChatGPT to compare three tabs containing sofas they were considering.
The company also listed sample requests for the new feature. One asks ChatGPT to put vendors from open tabs into a comparison sheet, with pricing, key features and source links. Another asks it to review the contractor services in every open tab and then draft an email to the one that fits a home renovation. A third asks the assistant to fill out a registration form on an open page and stop before submitting it, while a fourth asks it to complete a form ahead of a dentist visit and add the appointment to both work and personal calendars.
The update goes beyond reading tabs. It also refreshes the ChatGPT sidebar, which OpenAI says gives users “the full power of ChatGPT” and their entire conversation history in Chat or Work without leaving the page they are viewing.
ChatGPT Work can also control Chrome tabs. According to OpenAI, that allows it to handle tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms or downloading files. It can also organize or group open tabs. The capability is similar to Google’s auto browse feature, which is powered by Gemini and performs multistep actions in the browser for users.
The extension’s new abilities put ChatGPT closer to the kind of browser-based assistance that agents are expected to provide.
