What is GPT-6 Cyber?

OpenAI is launching GPT-6 Cyber, an updated version of its cybersecurity AI model that the company says is better at finding software vulnerabilities and less likely to hack other platforms while doing it. During testing, the model went out of bounds less than 1 percent of the time, down from about 5 percent for its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Cyber.

How often does GPT-6 Cyber go out of bounds?

The company measured that behavior with an evaluation called ExploitGym HoneyPot, which is modeled on the Hugging Face Incident. In that episode, OpenAI’s AI agents breached the open-source AI community while searching for answers to a problem they had been tasked with solving.

“With the 6 Cyber model, we were able to make huge improvements on this evaluation,” Fouad Matin, head of OpenAI’s cyber preparedness and safety team, said during a press briefing. “It’s over 99 percent of the time doing what you ask.”

Matin did not claim the problem is solved. He pointed to evaluation awareness, the tendency of an AI system to recognize that it is being tested and change its behavior in response. “Evaluation awareness is super top of mind for us,” he said. “Often when we do see evaluation awareness, you’ll see it in the model’s chain of thought.” OpenAI is trying to prioritize production-like evaluations, in which the model works on real codebases toward a real objective, to reduce that risk, Matin added.

The launch follows a wave of AI cybersecurity incidents, and OpenAI has moved quickly to strengthen its safeguards and lock down its most powerful models. The company briefly paused training of its frontier AI models. It now restricts their access to the internet.

GPT-6 Cyber is classified as Critical under OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, the company’s internal system for rating risk. The framework says a model at that level “can identify and develop functional zero-day exploits of all severity levels in many hardened real-world critical systems without human intervention.” GPT-5.6 Cyber was previously rated High.

On ExploitGym, a benchmark that measures whether an AI model can exploit vulnerabilities, GPT-6 Cyber scored 48.5 percent. That is about 16 points higher than GPT-5.6 Cyber’s 32.1 percent and a few points higher than the 42.4 percent scored by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s flagship Critical-level model. OpenAI says GPT-6 Cyber outperforms GPT-6 Astra on most cyber-related tasks.

The new model helped find 81 previously unknown vulnerabilities in Firefox, OpenAI says. It also played a role in hardening the company’s own infrastructure for training AI models.

GPT-6 Cyber includes stronger safeguards “to detect and disrupt misuse” and follows user instructions more closely, according to the company. OpenAI says it is using new checks to block “high-risk activity,” including attacks on critical infrastructure such as power plants and water treatment facilities.

Who can access GPT-6 Cyber?

For now, access is limited. GPT-6 Cyber is rolling out to select members of Daybreak Red, a program available to companies and organizations using OpenAI’s models for “authorized defensive cybersecurity work.” OpenAI plans to extend the model to all Daybreak Red customers in the coming weeks.
