What is OpenAI changing in the ChatGPT desktop app?

OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT experience, a move that would simplify a desktop app that many users find hard to navigate. The company announced the plan in an email to users, saying the new setup will first be offered to select users so it can gather feedback before a broader release.

The current desktop app is split into several sections. There is ChatGPT and a separate Codex area, and within ChatGPT, users switch between Chat and Work. That structure can make it hard to tell where a conversation is happening or where a given project lives.

According to the email, the combined experience is designed to let users move from an early idea to finished work without changing screens. “This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place,” the email said. Users will be able to bring in their files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or handle tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding the work as it progresses.

Will Codex be part of the merged ChatGPT experience?

Codex will not be folded into that experience. It will remain a separate section of the ChatGPT desktop app.

Will the change affect ChatGPT usage limits?

OpenAI also said that ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool after the transition. The company said the change won’t affect most users. However, depending on usage and the model being used, some people may have to wait for resets more frequently.

The move follows a similar step by a competitor. Anthropic, which makes the Claude chatbot, merged Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September.
